How to start a consulting business

It is exciting and challenging to become a consultant, as people view you as an expert in your field, and you develop your skills so that you enjoy what you do even more. But setting up that service in the first place is something that requires careful consideration.

First of all, ensure that you have any necessary certifications or license requirements before you set yourself up as a consultant. People will not hire you if you don’t, and you may be entering a legal minefield if you neglect this important part of setting up the consultancy.

You also have to be sure that you are a very organised person. Your clients will be expecting this, so get into some good practices if you want to set up that service.

Get networking

Start networking even before you formally open up your business to clients. Getting to know the local business landscape means that you will know the problems that are out there, and how you fit into solving those problems for business owners and entrepreneurs. It makes sense to get out and meet people, and to ensure that they remember who you are.

Set up a compelling list of services so that potential clients will know what they can expect from you, and how you can solve their problems. This list has to accurately meet the questions and needs of your potential client group, and this list will also form the basis of any pitches and proposals you may make in the future. Take your time over it, and memorise what it is that sets you apart from the rest of the people in the industry.

Finally, set goals for the business. Be sure to know what you expect to achieve in 3 or 5 years time. This makes it a lot easier when times get rough.
