Developing a clear business consulting methodology is important, because it shows the client that you are thinking seriously about how best to help them by putting systems in place that should show results. There are many different kinds of business consulting methodologies, and not all of them are appropriate or even realistic for every consultant out there. But we will look at a couple here, just to give you an idea of how they work.

The project management methodology is a classic way of working with a client in a systematic and focused manner. The PRINCE-2 methodology here is a well used one in the industry, and it allows all people involved to have a high level of control over the work that is undertaken. Taking a project management approach allows for some very good work to be done, with a high level of quality outcome planning taking place.

Business process management

Then you can look at business process management and improvement. This is very popular, especially with companies that produce products rather than services. It allows consultants to bring a clear approach to ensuring that all processes carried out y the client are tight and focused. In fact, this kind of methodology is one of the most popular among consultants themselves, because it is easy to bring a level of analysis and support to it that can help any client.

It is easy to get swamped by your workload, and to feel that you cannot bring any kind of methodology to anything that you do. But the business consultant’s work is primed for methodical working, so it is always useful to familiarise yourself with key methodologies, and then utilise them in your practise. That way, you bring a professional and systematic approach to the work you carry out for clients.
