When you start out as a business consultant, you barely have time to sit still. And the worst thing is, you have plenty of challenges to face before you can comfortably call yourself a business consultant. In this article we will look at some of the challenges you will have to face, and see what you might be able to do to overcome them.
The first real problem is obviously getting your first assignment. This may seem like a huge mountain to climb, but it will happen eventually. The quickest way to get that first job is to develop your skills to such a degree that you can match them perfectly to the needs of any prospects you may have. You will basically then be able to show that you can help clients. Take the time to learn all you can about the industry you are trying to land clients in and then build on that expertise. It will bring you work quicker.
The other big challenge we would like to talk about is money-related. If you jump into consulting after having a steady job it can be exciting or scary, depending how you look at it. However, if you have family, it can be a little scarier than you might feel comfortable with. It is important that you understand that money will not be in regular supply unless you really go all out for business. You will have to be prospecting on a consistent basis to ensure your sales pipeline is running smoothly. This can be challenging, especially if you do not have the safety net that is the regular paycheque.
So bear those two challenges in mind, and just remember that if you work hard at it, you will soon find yourself having to turn clients away. When that happens, all that hard work starts to make sense.
